The use of gestures & non-verbal communication in children with Angelman syndrome
We are looking for parents of children with Angelman syndrome to take part in a study looking at communication based at the Cerebra Centre for Neurodevelopmental Disorders at the University of Birmingham.
What is the aim of the research?
This study aims to gain further understanding about the use of non-verbal communicative behaviours used by children with Angelman syndrome. This will allow us to develop our understanding of how children with Angelman syndrome use non-verbal behaviours to communicate, and we hope from this we will get a better understanding of their ability for communication with alternative communication systems.
What will the research involve?
For this study, we will need to complete a research visit which can either be at your home or at the University, whichever is easiest for you.
The assessment itself will consist of short sessions where we will be playing games and interacting with your child, but also sessions where our social attention is limited. We are interested in how your child naturally behaves in these situations. To make sure we capture as much as we can, we will also ask you to repeat these sessions with your child. We will provide you with training and practice beforehand!
